Forklift Truck Training Program
Operators should undergo training on an industrial-powered lift truck, or forklift to be given forklift operator certification. The training program must be specific to the forklift attachments and type that you will be using on the job. Training must also reflect the environment wherein you would be working. Forklift safety should be a main concern for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Credentials
Anybody operating a forklift must undergo both training and certification before assuming operator duties. Basic qualifications for operating a forklift include an age of at least eighteen years and the physical capacity to safely operate and control the unit.
Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians must be a main concern of any forklift driver. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and forklift drivers should honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at intersections or crosswalks.
Weather Conditions
Numerous accidents involving forklifts happen at loading docks. These places become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors causing a very slippery floor. Wet floor conditions could lead to a hazard and drivers must be aware of possible hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Forklift certification programs include a combination of practical training and classroom instruction tailored to the particular needs of the workplace. Training must be undertaken on the kind of forklift and attachments which would be used by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
Each year roughly one hundred people die in forklift accidents. There are 100,000 forklift injuries reported every year. The majority of these accidents could be avoided with attention to safety and proper operator training.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklifts provide height and versatility. These units are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm that extends over the top of the truck. The arm, or crane, is referred to as a telescopic boom. The boom allows the operator to raise the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Standard forklifts can not move the load away from and towards the cab of the forklift, whereas a telescopic forklift could allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is commonly utilized in construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater control and lift is needed.
In situations needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments referred to as forklift carton clamp attachments are recommended. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that allow the operator to use uniform clamping force when lifting a cargo. It is available with a backrest which protects the cargo from damage.
A sleep sheet forklift would normally use a slip sheet attachment for storing systems which don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This kind of system is handy for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A lift platform which is meant to lift staff is referred to as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forklift forks and a chain or strap is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
